Must-See Experiences in Edinburgh
Edinburgh is a city bursting with culture. From the famous festivals, to amazing architecture, the Scottish capital is just waiting to be explored. To showcase the culture in Edinburgh, the city is well equipped with many excellent tourist attractions, interesting museums and diverse art galleries.
To visit all of Edinburgh’s tourist attractions would take weeks if not months, but there are a few standout attractions that every visitor to this magnificent city should experience. Top of the list are Edinburgh’s main historic buildings, like Edinburgh Castle, Palace of Holyroodhouse, and Hopetoun House, all of which are accompanied by engrossing exhibits charting their history over the centuries. There’s also a selection of more alternative attractions, like the Scotch Whisky Experience and Edinburgh International Climbing Centre.
Being the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh is home to a number of the national galleries, including the Scottish National Gallery, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, which together hold a fine collection of work by Scottish artists and select works from further afield. There are also many independent galleries, the pick of which is the City Art Centre, which houses an ever changing curation of works from all over the world.
Finally, the museums in Edinburgh explore all manner of subjects, and house a number of works of global significance. If you’re only in the city for a short time, the National Museum of Scotland is the best place to take in as much Scottish history as possible. The Museum on the Mound, the Museum of Childhood and the Scottish National War Museum, housed in Edinburgh Castle, are all worth visiting if you have time.
The above is just a selection of Edinburgh’s best visitor attractions, but it’s plain to see just how much there is to see and do in the capital. While you will unlikely have time to explore all of these, any combination of the above will result in a fascinating tour of the history and current legacy of the Scottish capital.
