Annual Events in Edinburgh
A Host of Must See Yearly Events & Attractions
It’s probably fair to say that if you were to think about events taking place in Edinburgh, our mind will instantly turn to the famous summer festivals, and these are the biggest tourist draws in the city, with over 2million people attending the Fringe festival alone. However, saying that the festivals are the only events in Edinburgh does the city a disservice. There are a number of local, national and global attractions held annually, and there’s sure to be something to appeal to you.
If you’re athletically minded, then the Edinburgh Marathon is probably right up your street. The race starts at the peak of Arthur’s Hill, working its way out of the city centre and along the coast to Musselburgh.
There’s also Edinburgh Hogmanay, which encompasses a series of events across New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. In the late nineties, the celebration broke the world record for biggest New Year’s celebration. The highlight of the Hogmanay is the midnight fireworks display that lights up the capital’s skyline.
Slightly further out of the city centre is the Royal Highland Show. The annual celebration of Scottish farming and agriculture was first held in 1822, and found its permanent home in the Ingliston area of the city in 1960.
Finally, although technically not in Edinburgh, just up the road is the hugely popular T in the Park music festival. The world’s fifth most popular music festival, and behind only Glastonbury on the list of the UK’s most popular, T in The Park attracts an estimated 250,000 people during its three day running time, with global acts like Arctic Monkeys and The Killers being regulars on the bill.
These are just a few of the most popular events that take place in and around the Scottish capital each and every year.
