Theatre & Film in Edinburgh
World-Class Entertainment Around Every Corner
If there’s one thing that Edinburgh knows, it’s theatre, and the city’s silver screen pedigree isn’t too bad either. The Edinburgh festivals include a plethora of arts and culture, from the International Science Festival to the multicultural Edinburgh Mela, but the core of the festival is all about performing arts, and the Edinburgh International Festival, Festival Fringe and the Edinburgh International Film Festival are some of the biggest crowd pleasers. To cope with the demand for theatre and film, they need a range of excellent venues spread out across the city.
The standout venue in Edinburgh is the Festival Theatre, named for its close links with the festivals. Located on Nicholson Street, it combines a resplendent interior, traditional décor and lavish fittings, with a modern exterior, complete with an imposing glass façade that sets the building apart from its neighbours. The King’s Theatre, also a primary venue for the festival season, which has undergone a major redevelopment in recent years, is equally elegant inside, but has a much more traditional frontage.
Edinburgh also has a deep-seated connection with the world of cinema, not least due to its hosting of the EIFF every year since 1947. In fact, many Hollywood blockbusters have been set on the streets of Edinburgh, including Trainspotting, 39 Steps, Shallow Grave and Chariots of Fire. If you’re in the mood for going to see a film in Edinburgh, then you’ve got an excellent range of cinema houses to choose from.
Of all the venues, the Dominion Cinema has the most striking look. The modernist architecture made popular in the 1930s gives the cinema a very distinctive feel, and is one of the main venues for the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Other important venues for the festival, and for Edinburgh cinema all year round, include the Royal Lyceum Theatre and Cameo. The Scotsman Hotel itself also houses a private 46 seater cinema in its five-star surroundings, available for hire for fun screenings or corporate events.
